There was no New Year’s celebration in the freezing town of Andagua in the Valley of the Volcanoes near Arequipa, Peru. Only a few errant fireworks. Judy and Felix got up at the midnight hour but Arie remained huddled in bed. Two days earlier we had crossed from the Colca Canyon to the Valley of the Volcanoes via 5100 metre Sicuani Pass and then on New Years Eve trudged through lava flows to have a bed and a hot shower for the new year. (We missed on the second wish).

Cold… cold… cold… characterises our time in Peru. Teaching English in gloves to students who mumble through their scarves which are wrapped around their nose and mouth. No heating in any building. Standing in a ray of sunlight that has escaped from the clouds and reveling in its’ weak warmth.

Bo arrived in January and by February the family were all in Colombia, along with Felix.
Quick Spanish lesson: “Hay = there is” and “No Hay = no there isn’t, no it is not possible, or its too hard, or why ask me?”
Though Bo didn’t appreciate at the time, we were in a land of “HAY.” That is opposed to Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia – which are countries of “NO effin’ HAY” (thanks Ted Simon!)

On Mum’s sixtieth we went paragliding in Medellin!!! What a way to celebrate. And then onto the gorgeous Caribbean Coast.   Bo’s dentist in Oz had helpfully told him that Colombia had the best dentists in the world – and so when mum broke a tooth – she was the best place to be.  So after Carnaval in  Baranquilla mum headed back to Cartagena for her dental work (and what was to end up as 3 months in Colombia) while Bo headed to Rio and Felix and I back to Peru.
Colombia is definitely the number one friendly, beautiful, incredible country in South America… and hey, perhaps even the world.

July – farewell to Cusco & we headed through Bolivia onto Buenos Aires where Felix waved us goodbye at the airport.
Two days in London was a balm to our souls. Real food, hot water, a place where we could communicate, maps …. The positive adjectives could go on and on… Alarm bells should have rung at that stage. We were in no frame of mind to arrive in India.

Ladakh and Kashmir were amazing – made so by fellow travellers, the “freak show”, and that there weren’t many Indians there.  In mid September Kristel came running down a train platform and into our lives – and we launched into a high speed tour of  the tourist spots of Rajasthan and Madyha Pradesh. By mid October we were exhausted. India’s sensory stimulation had caused Arie, particularly, to overload. She couldn’t handle any more. We bailed out to Myanmar – which was the best decision we have ever made and Myanmar now ranks up there with Laos as the friendliest/happiest nation on earth.
