It is interesting how your opinions can change so much, when juxtaposed against what has come before. We first came to Myanmar after India in 2004 and it appeared relatively clean and organized.  We fell in love with the country and the amazingly friendly and intelligent people. Myanmar topped the list of our favourite destinations and we felt an enormous connection with this mixed up country under a military dictatorship.

In 2006 after the orderliness of China, Myanmar seemed achingly poor and messy. Not just the decaying faded air of Mandalay, but there is a real diversity on the streets with Burmese, Chinese, Indian and Shan faces on the streets, as well as of the other minority nations.  Hot chapattis sizzle on street corners, and with a colourful range of fresh Burmese food, it’s a tantalizing mix.

We can’t put our finger on it – but Burma is an amazing country and one that we know that we will return to, time and time again.
